Trips to Newbury

1 / 5

In the southern part of West Berkshire, England, lies the idyllic town of Newbury. The town center is surrounded by green parks and notable buildings from the 17th century. The area is picturesque with the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal flowing through the town. Small motorboats travel along the river, and you have the opportunity to hop on one for a pleasant boat tour. This offers a new perspective on Newbury and a chance to discover the attractions and buildings lining both sides of the river. On one side is Victoria Park with its impressive Queen Victoria Monument in the center, and on the other stands the old church St Nicolas.

Newbury is best known for the Newbury Racecourse, a renowned horse racing venue. The headquarters of Vodafone UK and the large company Micro Focus International are also located here, making them prides of the town.

For a short day trip, Highclere Castle is 10 km south. This is where the popular series Downton Abbey is filmed, so if you want to see behind the scenes, this is the place to visit. The castle boasts fantastic architecture surrounded by beautiful gardens (Monks’ Garden, The Secret Garden, and The Wood of Goodwill). You can tour the castle to see the beautifully decorated rooms and take extended walks in the park, including Highclere Park Public Walk and Old Burghclere Public Footpath.

Activities and Entertainment

Located near Newbury's train station is Britain's leading horse racing track, Newbury Racecourse. During a visit, you can bet on your favorite horses while enjoying high-quality entertainment. There's even a chance to win money!

Golf is a popular sport here, with Newbury Racecourse Golf Course and Newbury & Crookham Golf Club located nearby. The golf courses are gently undulating and set in beautiful surroundings, playable year-round. Just outside the town center, you'll also find Deanwood Park Golf Club and Donnington Valley Golf Club, catering to both pros and beginners with various course options.

Getting to Newbury

Neighboring towns include Oxford to the north, Reading to the east, and Swindon to the west. With excellent transport links, you can easily travel to and from Newbury and explore the area during your visit to England. For public transport, there are good connections between these towns via train and bus.

Newbury's central location features train and bus stations with connections on the line between Reading and Plymouth. It takes about an hour and a half to drive to London, and with one train transfer at Reading, it takes under an hour to reach Paddington Station in London by train. This makes Newbury an ideal base for day trips into its surroundings.
