Baden-Württemberg is a federal state in southwestern Germany, formed in 1952 through the merger of Südbaden, Württemberg-Baden, and Württemberg-Hohenzollern. It borders Switzerland to the south and France to the west. Within Germany, it shares borders with the states of Rhineland-Palatinate (northwest), Hesse (north), and Bavaria (east).
The Danube River has its source in Baden-Württemberg, and the Neckar and Main river tributaries also flow through the state. The Rhine forms part of the border with France and Switzerland. Adjacent to the Swiss border is Lake Constance, one of Central Europe's largest lakes.
The Black Forest is a forested mountain range in Baden-Württemberg. Its highest peak is Feldberg, which reaches 1,493 meters.
The capital city of the state is Stuttgart. Other larger cities include Baden-Baden, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, and Ulm.
